Blog Assignment 1

Bentley Kelley 2009
Hello, my name is Jennifer Kelley. I am a thirty year old single mother that is returning to school for the third (and final) time. The greatest joy in my life is the young man you see pictured here, Jameson Bentley-Alan Kelley. He is four years old and keeps me on my toes. I was born here in Mobile but as a toddler, we moved to Loxley, Alabama. My father is a Minister of Music and so I was destined to move a couple more times. Five years later, we moved to Selma, Alabama. Selma was a very interesting place to live. Each year I lived there I was able to attend the Battle of Selma, Civil War Reenactment. There were many other historical points of interest close to the area, like the Edmond Pettis Bridge, Cahaba, Moundville, Tuskgegee, and Montgomery. The summer before high school we moved to Satsuma, bringing me back to the Mobile area. I graduated Satsuma High School in 1998 and attended my first year of college at University of Mobile, majoring in music (vocal concentration). After my first year of college, I was still unsure about what I wanted to do. I returned to school in 2004 at Faulkner State Community College, majoring in business (I wanted to open a restaurant). My second attempt at college was as short lived as the first. In 2006, I was blessed with my son, Bentley, and it renewed my desire to continue my education. After agonizing over what I could major in, I realized that I had a love for helping others, teaching others and I learned that sometimes, those that you are teaching, teach you. It felt like a natural decision to go into Secondary Education so that I could also concentrate on a love of mine, history. My plans are to teach High School history while earning a degree in ESOL (English Speakers of Other Languages). Once I have attained my Master's, the world is my oyster.

  3. Nice to meet you Jennifer. I too am an "older" college student. I didn't start until I was 37. We are proof that it can be done! School is tough but, I couldn't imagine doing it as a single parent. Kudos to you! If you need any help along the way,let me know,I would be glad to help you. See you in class.
